Little Twin Stars

Also known as: Kiki and Lala, キキララ

Kiki and Lala, the twins from the stars, are among the oldest Sanrio characters. Their items from the 70s and 80s are utterly charming, and easy to confuse with reissues: here are my tips.

Their story

Once upon a time, there were twins born on a star… Their parents sent them to Earth to learn to grow up and shine on their own. Lala, the elder, loves drawing, writing and cooking. Kiki, the younger, adores fishing for stars and inventing all sorts of things.

Sanrio created them in 1975, the same year as My Melody. A lovely detail: their names were chosen by the readers of one of the publisher’s magazines.

Why we fall for the early items

Items from the Showa era, made before 1989, have a softness the reissues only half manage to imitate: gentle colours, lithographed metal, thick paper. And for many of us, they are simply the treasures of our childhood.

The reissue trap

Sanrio regularly reissues vintage designs. Before you fall for an item, look at the hair colour (brown and blonde on the oldest ones), the copyright line printed on the item, and the real wear in the photos.

Tips for dating an item

  1. The 70s and early 80sBrown hair for Kiki, blonde for Lala.
  2. From the mid-80sBlue hair for Kiki, pink for Lala, the colours we know today.
