Polly Pocket (Bluebird)

Also known as: ポーリーポケット

These little compacts that open onto a miniature world were launched in 1989 by Bluebird Toys. They are the ones collectors look for, before Mattel transformed the range in 1998.

Her story

In 1983, English designer Chris Wiggs made his daughter a tiny doll’s house inside a powder compact. What a lovely idea! Bluebird Toys took it up and launched Polly Pocket in 1989: plastic compacts that open onto a miniature scene, with figures barely 2.5 cm tall.

In 1998, Mattel bought Bluebird and transformed the range, with bigger dolls. The compacts from before 1998 have become collector’s pieces.

Why we fall for the Bluebird compacts

They fit in a pocket, close like a piece of jewellery and hide clever mechanisms: turning platforms, lights, lifts. Complete, with all their figures, they are worth far more than empty compacts.

What to check

Figures get lost easily: count them in the photos and compare with the compact’s original contents. Check the hinges too, which are fragile, and the battery compartment of light-up models, which may have leaked.

Tips for dating an item

  1. Bluebird, from 1989 to 1998Figures about 2.5 cm tall, with a round base that clicks into the compact. Polly has a curly bob.
  2. Markings on the compactThe Bluebird Toys name and the year are moulded into the plastic, usually inside or under the compact.
  3. Disney range, from 1995 to 1999Disney mini collections (Cinderella, Aladdin, The Lion King…) made by Bluebird in the same spirit.
  4. After 1998, at MattelBigger dolls with straight ponytails, then rubber clothes from 1999: this is no longer the Bluebird period.
  5. In JapanSome compacts sold in Japan carry both the Bluebird and Bandai names.
