Sylvanian Families

Also known as: シルバニアファミリー, Calico Critters

Launched in Japan in 1985 by Epoch, these soft little animal families won Europe over two years later. The first Japanese series, with their wooden and ceramic furniture, are true little treasures.

Their story

The Japanese toy maker Epoch dreamed up Sylvanian Families between 1983 and 1984, before launching them on 20 March 1985. The very first range had 9 families and 40 figures, with their houses and furniture. Success was immediate in Japan, then in Europe from 1987.

The idea has not changed since, and that is what makes them so endearing: families of flocked animals, dressed in real fabric, living a peaceful life in a country village.

Why we fall for the first series

The early years can be recognised by their materials, with wooden and ceramic furniture, and by characters that have never been reissued. In Japan, many were carefully put away in their original box: you can still find complete families, some never taken out of their packaging.

The reissue trap

Epoch regularly reissues its classics, like the big red-roofed house. The stamp under the foot is not enough to date a figure: look at the box instead, its reference, the furniture materials and the real wear in the photos.

Tips for dating an item

  1. First range, 1985Grey and brown rabbits, mice, squirrels, grey and brown bears, raccoons, moles and foxes.
  2. The "1985 Epoch" stamp under the footIt dates the creation of the brand, not the making of the figure: you also find it on recent figures. Do not rely on it alone.
  3. 80s furnitureOften wood or ceramic. Current Japanese versions are mostly plastic.
  4. Vintage Japanese boxesThe reference often starts with the first character of the family name, then a number: ウ-01 for rabbits (usagi), リ for squirrels (risu), カ for furniture (kagu), ハ for houses.
  5. Signs of ageSlightly yellowed white plastic on the houses, flocking a little flattened at the back of the head after years in a box: rather reassuring signs.

Current finds

  • A miniature red fireplace, slide and wooden swing in front of their Sylvanian Families boxes.

Sylvanian Families, early swing, slide and fireplace, boxed

The red slide, the wooden swing and the fireplace where you pictured a cosy fire: three classics from the early years, each with its box. Enough to let a whole family play in the garden and then warm up in the living room. Old boxes were often thrown away, so three at once is a lovely find. Before you fall for it, check in the photos that all the small parts of the swing are there.

    Sylvanian Families · Around 2000

Sylvanian Families, members' club house and clothes (around 2000)

These pieces were never on sale: Epoch gave them to members of its Sylvanian club. A house, a figure, clothes and their hangers, carefully kept for about 25 years. I should say that this is more recent than most of my finds: we are around the year 2000. The seller mentions slightly faded colours and a few stains on the dress. For anyone who loves pieces you cannot find anywhere, it is a lovely curiosity at a small price.
